Arnis: Filipino Martial Arts

If Japan has Judo, China has Kung fu, Korea has Taekwondo and Thailand has Kickboxing, the Philippines also has a deadly Martial art that the world has embraced. Collectively known as Arnis, it is a form of self defense which is characterized by the use of weapons in training. Internationally known as Kali, this Filipino Martial art is also known as Escrima in the Visayas. The basic weapon used is the stick called "cane" or "baston" but students are also taught to use other objects as weapons. I remember when I had this for my PE Class in college, my intructor told us that anything could be a weapon in Arnis. One just have to know how to use it to your advantage. He showed us how a mineral bottle, a ballpen or even a "paypay" can make deadly weapons in Arnis! Amazing, right?

Popularized by the late Ernesto Presas, Arnis is now being learned by students from around the globe especailly in the US and Europe. Before Presas' death in Canada, it was said that he trained 7 students (all of which are foreigner) to spread the art around the world, and so the International Modern Arnis Federation was founded.

Nagyon ko lang nalaman na ang taekwando was originally from Korea. Arnis pala yan na tinutukoy nilang eskrimahay tayo dito sa amin.

sorry naging double send ang comment ko.

i was trained to use arnis when I was a kid, kaya nung college di ko na kinuha. pero di ko alam na form of martial arts siya, ang turo kasi noon sa amin eh calisthenics type siya.

Hi Jowell... napanood mo yung show sa Discovery Channel featuring the different martial arts/fighting techniques all over the world? I forgot the title na but it was hosted by two men who were eager to learn these fight techniques. First episode nila was the Philippines' Yaw Yan - e bakit kaya di na-feature ang arnis??

this is so true. one vivid memory i have with my late uncle, the brother of my mom, was his very intense training of this sport every afternoon. grabe, galing nya. sayang at 33 he left this earth na. nakapagpaturo sana ko.:)

I am not sure you guy have videos yet on this blog for MMA, but I would love to help out and provide some for you. My webmaster compiled a bunch of video feeds from youtube and other sources, that would benefit this blog as well, if you are interested. Thanks again and have a great day!
